10 Things to Toss Today to Detoxify Your House

Are you trying to live a more natural lifestyle? I'm sharing 10 things you should toss in order to detoxify your home!

For most of my life, I was the most conventional person you’d ever meet.  I used chemical cleaners, burned candles, ate fast food, and didn’t think twice about the decisions I was making.  Then, I had my first baby, and had an overwhelming urge to protect her.  I started researching the products we were using and the food we were eating, because I wanted to do the best I could for her. We chose the best conventional products we could for a long time, because it’s all we could affort.  When she was around 18 months old, we started diving into a more natural lifestyle.  It was a long process, and we’re still not perfect, but we’ve been learning along the way!

For us, making this change was really overwhelming.  There is a lot of information out there, and it’s hard to know what you can trust and what you can’t.  I remember quite often feeling like we just couldn’t win. I wished I could just shove my head back in the sand and live a “normal” life again. Unfortunately, that’s not how it works.  Once you know how many dangerous chemicals are lurking, you can’t un-know it.

Have you ever heard of the Toxic Substance Control Act?  I know I hadn’t!  This act was passed by Congress in 1976 and grandfathered in over 60,000 chemicals being sold in markets.  That means they are simply unregulated.  In fact, around half of the chemicals on the market today have been subject to any safety testing at all. Since this act also included trade secret laws, manufacturers don’t even have to post what ingredients are in their products. If you go look at a bottle of household cleaner, you may be surprised to see that they only list a small percentage of the ingredients in the bottle.

There are so many ingredients that have been proven carcinogenic (which means they can cause cancer) that are being used in so many household products.  Not to mention all of the other chemicals known to be skin irritatants, neurotoxins, and so much more. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Alcohol
  • Aluminum
  • DEA/TEA
  • Propylene Glycol
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
  • TALC
  • Parabens
  • Fragrance
  • Diethanolamine
  • Chloroform
  • Benzyl Alcohol

From skin-and-hair care items to cleaners that you use around the house, these ingredients lurk everywhere.  That’s why we’ve been on a mission to detoxify our home.  I don’t think we’ll ever totally eliminate everything, but we can certainly do our best to reduce our exposure to these toxic ingredients!

I went ahead and added a few of the worst ingredients to each item on this list, so you can get a general idea.  I do urge you do look them up yourselves, though, because I didn’t include everything!

Products We Use Instead

I know that list looks so overwhelming.  In fact, it took us years to eliminate some of these items, because they’re things that are just so common!  Luckily, there are natural alternatives to every single one of these items.  On the plus side, you can actually end up saving money if you do it right!

We now buy a lot of our natural products from Young Living, which is one of the reasons I loved this company from the start.  That is where we buy our shampoo, body wash, sunscreen, and deodorant.  It’s also where we buy our cleaner, which is probably the product I use the absolute most!  We are able to use the Thieves Household Cleaner on every surface in our house, including the toilets, which ends up saving us a lot of money in the long run!

How to Get Started with Young Living Essential Oils

To eliminate the need for dryer sheets, we have swapped to wool dryer balls and essential oils as a natural alternative.  I love that I can use them over and over, and I can change the scent any time I want!

And finally, we’ve completely eliminated the need for candles and air fresheners by using our essential oil diffusers.  Not only do these not add extra toxins to the air we breathe, but they also eliminate the toxins that are already lurking!
