I’ve always been a big fan of a good sugar scrub, but I used to pay good money to buy them in the store.  Usually, I’d end up not loving the scent, or it’d feel waxy, or something else wouldn’t be quite right.  So much money was wasted on those products that I eventually stopped buying them.

I wish I’d known back then just how simple sugar scrubs are to make.  I would have never bought one!  These scrubs are perfect for gift giving, or you can just make them yourself for a night of pampering!

What you’ll need:

  • 8 oz mason jars
  • 1/4 c coconut oil
  • 3/4 c raw sugar
  • your choice of essential oils
  • a glass or metal mixing bowl*
  • a metal stirring utensil (spoon, fork, or whisk)

I feel like I need to preface this part by admitting that I don’t actually measure my ingredients.  I tend to eyeball everything, but I wanted to give you a rough measurement.  So, when you’re making your scrub, feel free to adjust things as you want, and don’t stress too much over having exactly what I’ve put here.

First, I put about 1/4 cup of coconut oil in my mixing bowl, and then I add my sugar on top.  I mix that and adjust my ingredients if I feel like it’s necessary, and once it’s the consistency I like, I add about 10 drops of my favorite essential oil to the mix.

Some of my favorite oils to use for a sugar scrub include:

  • lavender: great for your skin and incredibly soothing.
  • grapefruit: this is really good for cellulite!
  • lemon: naturally detoxifying.
  • peppermint: invigorating and perfect for a morning shower.

Once you add your essential oils, give your scrub one final mix and then transfer it to a mason jar.  If it’s just for yourself, you’re done!  If you’re planning to give this as a gift, it’s time to add a pretty label and a bow!

How to use your new sugar scrub:

Sugar scrub is a great exfoliant, and the coconut oil is nourishing to your skin, too.  All you have to do is scoop a bit of your scrub out of the jar with a spoon and scrub anywhere you could use a little extra softness.  I tend to rub down my heels regularly, because let’s face it, I don’t get in for a pedicure nearly as often as I’d like. Once you’re done, rinse well and dry off with a towel.
