How I’m Prepping for Back to School with Essential Oils

Do you have kids headed back to school? I'm sharing my favorite essential oils to keep them focused, well rested, and healthy all year long.

I can’t even believe I’m writing this right now, guys.  Didn’t summer break just start?  Well, here we are, 1 month out from the beginning of school, and I’m prepping for the first day! I’m so torn over going back to school this year.  I have one daughter starting a new campus, and the other starting her very last year at home with me.  This year, I’ll need a bit more time to prepare mentally than I normally do, so I’m starting early.

One of the ways that we prep for any big change is by stocking up on essential oils.  I learned last year just how much of a difference these can make in our day-to-day school life, so I won’t go without them this year!  Here are the oils we use a lot during the back to school season, in case you want to have an oily school year, too!

How I Use Essential Oils for School

First of all, as I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I only use Young Living essential oils.  Quality matters so much in aromatherapy, and I’m confident in Young Living’s quality control.  Where you get your oils from matters, and you simply won’t get the same benefits from a $5 bottle of oil at the grocery store as you will from a bottle of Young Living’s oils.  I can tell you this with certainty, because I’ve tried many different brands over the years, before finally deciding that I was all in with Young Living!

Essential Oils for Focus & Altertness

Last year, for the first time ever, my daughter started having trouble focusing in school.  My straight-A high achiever started bringing home tests with failing grades.  A quick look over her answers told me the problem: She wasn’t paying attention!  She would just not do the last three questions on a test, or she’d pull the same word from the word-bank three times.  I started digging, and found a few oils that we could use for focus, and they’ve made a huge difference in her grades and performance in class! So, having oils ready for her focus is my number-one priority for the first day of school this year. Here’s how we’ll use essential oils to help us stay focused and alert:

First, I’ll start the morning by diffusing lemon and peppermint throughout the house.  This will help us all wake up and get ready for the day ahead. They’re also both very happy oils, which is a really great way to start the day.  I don’t know about you, but I can always tell a difference when I forget to diffuse oils in the morning.

I’ve also made her an essential oil blend in a roller bottle that she applies before school, and also keeps in her backpack to use throughout the day.  This blend of lavender, cedarwood, and vetiver is the blend that finally made me a believer in the power of oils. I can tell by her grades when she forgets to apply it, so I’ve got this blend ready and waiting for her!

In the afternoons when school lets out, I’m going to diffuse Young Living’s GeneYus blend to help her get into homework mode.  This is one of the KidScent blends, which I love, because they’re designed specifically with kids in mind!

Essential Oils for Our Immune Systems

Oh boy.  If one thing is for sure, back to school season also means back to the doctor season, right? Germs tend to fly around those classrooms, and I, for one, don’t want to deal with them.  Two years ago, I started using essential oils to help us boost our immune systems, and my daughter went from using her maximum number of sick days, to having perfect attendence.  These oils really are incredibly powerful when used correctly, and used preventatively.

I’ve already got my blends ready for us to use daily this year, to keep as much sickness away as possible.  First, we’ve got our immune boosting blend.  This blend has Thieves, Lemon, Frankincense, and Oregano in it.  I make sure everyone rolls this blend on their feet before putting on shoes and walking out the door.

I diffuse Purification in the house when I know colds are going around the school.  That way, if my daughter brings home any germs, I can be sure to eliminate them from the air before they settle in and get us sick!

I’ve also got RC on hand for respiratory support, as well as Digize and Peppermint on hand for digestive support.  We’re definitely ready for anything that comes our way this year!

Essential Oils for Staying Calm and Well Rested

Sending the kids back to school requires a lot of emotional support for everyone.  We go from the lazy, slow  days of summer, to days that are jam-packed with activities.  When school starts back up, we are faced with early mornings, homework, dance classes, and other extra-curriculars.  That always brings on a lot of stress for me, because I do enjoy my down-time! My go-to essential oil when I start feeling stressed out is Stress-Away!  I mean, it’s right there in the name.  I personally think this oil should be every mom’s best friend.  And honestly? My 8 year old enjoys it, too.  Sometimes, I put this blend in her diffuser necklace to help her stay emotionally balanced at school.

In the evenings, I also like to diffuse Lavender to help everyone calm down and get ready for a good night’s sleep.  Sometimes, if I think the kids need extra help winding down, I’ll whip up a quick lavender bath salt for them to use before bed time.  That’s always a sure-fire way to get them to sleep early.

This is our back to school game plan this year.
